so it is coming to that stage where my desktop and my wife’s machine’s windows 7 beta is going to be “expiring” in march or april i think. it is time to think about what operating system i am going to install and am i going to do the right thing of buying the software or go the linux route (again).

i used to change my desktop every now and then from windows to linux and then windows again. i always seem to go back to windows. the reason for this is gaming.

i’ve used the following as a desktop at home:

ubuntu

ubuntu

fedora

fedora

linux mint

linux mint

debian

debian

i love playing games. some games work perfect under wine, others just refuse to work or if they do work then they crash every now and then which becomes highly annoying. i have just fallen in love with linux mint. i find it so much nicer than ubuntu, eventhough it is based on ubuntu the functionality and the ability to do stuff is much easier than to do it on ubuntu.

anyhoo, now the time has come as to what do i do. do i go out and buy windows 7 for about a R1.5k or do i try the linux desktop thing again. i want to be a good person and try and buy windows if i end up going that route.

my wife uses some graphic programs which i have not tested on wine yet. other than that, she will be able to use linux for all her other everyday functions. i would happily move to linux if it were not for my gaming. there is software out there that one gets like cedega or crossover. but the problem is, it is a yearly subscription. now i would not mind paying for it but then i might as well buy windows?

what i am going to do is install linux mint and windows dual boot and see if i cannot tweak and play around with wine and see if i can get the games working.

i will keep you posted as to what i decide and if i come right.
other than that, if any of you have idea, please feel free to comment!
