frustration

10 July 2009

i don’t know where to start with this post. as some of you know i have started a new job in town, which i will blog about next week sometime. this post is mainly a bitching session and a rant and rave.
my car gave me issues about 3 weeks ago when a water pipe burst. i sorted that out but then she would not start. so monday night Nick offered to tow my car all the way to a guy’s workshop to have a look at it. tuesday morning the guy has a look at it and says it’s a blown head gasket. cool…not too bad just gonna cost a couple of grand no probs. now being a bit low on cash and did not budget for this i decided to make a trip to the bank only to sit there for over an hour and spend a whole 50 seconds with the consultant to tell me no i can’t get a loan cause i started a new job and need to be 3 months employed. nice one absa, you just lost yourself a customer AND business, cheers.

now i take the bus to work to town which i must say is awesome, no traffic stress and all that stuff! anyhoo, when i first started going on the bus i got the shock of my life.

“1 ticket to cape town please” while handing over a R20 note.

“that’ll be another 70c”

“it is a oneway ticket you know”

“yeah, it’s R20.70″

so like, geeeeeeez….that’s more than i pay for petrol to town on my own. are they for real?
anyhoo, i payed that for a couple of days R20.70c. then yesterday i went with Carl to the bus station after i got to cape town and bought a weekly ticket. that gets clipped each time you ride the bus and it has a 2 weeks expiry date. so basically i buy one of these every 2 weeks (as i only take the bus to cape town…i take the train home). one of these weekly tickets costs me….wait for it….R67.50. let’s work it out. R67.50 divide that by 10 clips. R6.75. now where the hell is the logic in that? R20.70 without a weekly ticket but R6.75 with one? are they for real? if you buy a month ticket, it is even less! what a fraking ripoff!

no, not finished with the bus yet…this next one also frustrats the hell out of me. the bus to town in the morning runs from about 06h00 to 07h20. not too bad as most people start at 08h00 anyways. but now the reason i am taking the train after work is because i work till 17h30. the last bus out of town leaves at….17h15. now what the hell is up with that? most people work till 17h00. which would leave one to get to the station or a bus stop in 15 minutes. now the place where i work is about 20 minutes fast walk to the station. so if i finished at 17h00 i’d still miss the bus. why not make one last bus out of town leave at 17:35? if the last bus leaves at 17:15, how many buses actually leave at that time cause i am damn sure that bus would be full as hell.

reading over this post, i sound more mellow than anything else…hmmmm

postfix and it’s wonders

10 July 2009

I had a client ask me a while ago if i can block all email coming in for his domain but allow certain domains/emails to be able to send to him.

I managed to find an arcticle on it thanks to Winston!

Add this line to /etc/postfix/main.cf:

smtpd_restriction_classes = domain_class
domain_class =
check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/access_domain_class
reject

This will cause Postfix to pass the sender address of all e-mail classified as fredclass through the access table access_domain_class, and if it doesn’t get accepted there, it gets rejected.

The file /etc/postfix/access_domain_class should contain this sort of thing:

# These are for various technical reasons.
double-bounce@mx.mydomain.com OK
root@mx.mydomain.com OK
MAILER-DAEMON@mx.mydomain.com OK

# These are the good guys.
user@domain.com OK
domain.com OK

E-mail from the above addresses and domains to bob@domain.com will be accepted. All other sender addresses will be rejected.

After creating the file /etc/postfix/access_domain_class, run the postmap command on it:

hostname/# cd /etc/postfix
hostname/# postmap hash:access_domain_class
hostname/# /etc/init.d/postfix reload

Up to this point, we have only defined the class domain_class and created
the database file /etc/postfix/access_domain_class which says who is
permitted to send e-mail to bob@domain.com. Now we must tell Postfix
that all e-mail addressed to bob@domain.com is of class domain_class.

The main.cf should already have something like this:

smtpd_recipient_restrictions =
hash:/etc/postfix/access_recipient

This causes Postfix to pass the recipient address of all incoming e-mail through the table access_recipient.  In our case, we will not simply accept or reject e-mail to bob@domain.com. Instead we will just indicate that it is of class domain_class.

In the file /etc/postfix/access_recipient, this should appear:

bob@domain.com domain_class

This means that all e-mail addressed to bob@domain.com is classified as domain_class, which implies that the test check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/access_domain_class will be applied to all such e-mails in accordance with the rule in /etc/postfix/main.cf.

To activate the changes to the file /etc/postfix/access_recipient, do this:

hostname/# cd /etc/postfix
hostname/# postmap hash:access_recipient
hostname/# /etc/init.d/postfix restart

access denied

26 June 2009

so it’s my last friday at my current job. busy handing over stuff and explaining things to the new guy here.
felling quite sad when i am removing my usernames from the servers and disabling access to stuff :( been here almost 4 years and you get so used to doing stuff and logging onto certain servers to check things but now you don’t have access to anymore and it feels strange. but hey, need to move on and i am looking forward to starting new job next week and get back into things i enjoy! the last 2 weeks has been laid back and not doing any new things due to me having to do documentation and knowledge transfer.
this afternoon is my farewell lunch and who else know what else is in store….

Alicia’s Poem

22 June 2009
nargrand

nagrand

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
across Northrend’s bright and shining snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
on Westfall’s fields of golden grain.
I am in the morning hush,
of Stranglethorn’s jungle, green and lush.
I am in the drums loud and grand,
the thunderous hooves across Nagrand.
I am the stars warmly gleaming,
over Darnassus softly dreaming.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

This poem is based on Do not stand at my grave and weep, thought to be written by Mary Elizabeth Frye.

It was written in honor of Dak Krause.

general vezax down!

16 June 2009

so last night i was in my first general vezax kill! daaaaaaamn what a fight! our guild 2 shotted him last week but this week it took us a few attempts to down him.

one thing that makes this fight crazy is the fact there is NO mp5 (mana regeneration) so for healers this fight totally sucks ass! the only way to get mana back is from a green go that drops to the ground from the dps killing things called “saronite crystals”. but that not where it ends, when you stand on it, it not only restores a bit on mana, it damages you too! so you need to get a few ticks on you and not too many otherwise the next tick might just kill you.
e.g
1 stack – 100 mana 200 damage
2 stacks – 200 mana 400 damage
3 stacks – 400 mana 800 damage
4 stacks – 800 mana 1,600 damage
5 stacks – 1,600 mana 3,200 damage
6 stacks – 3,200 mana 6,400 damage
7 stacks – 6,400 mana 12,800 damage
8 stacks – 12,800 mana 25,600 damage
9 stacks – 25,600 mana 51,200 damag

other than that there are a few abilities he does such as “mark of the faceless” ( need to get away from people within 10 yards otherwise each tick deals 5k per second to them and also heals vezax for 100k hp each tick), “searing flames” which does damage to everyone in the raid for a crap load which needs to be interrupted!, “shadow crash” which you need to avoid and it leaves a black goo on the ground which ranged dps needs to stand in to be able to get some faster attack speed and reduced ability costs, and it’s bad for heals and last but not least “surge of darkness” which gives vezax a 100% damage increase which the tank needs to use a cooldown or kite him or have healers heal him alot (but remember the mp5 issue? bad idea)
other than that, it is actually an easy fight if you can watch out for shadow crush and mark of the faceless and control your mana and make sure the tanks don’t die.
last night’s kill the tank died with about 2mil of his hp left and the rogues did some wicked evasion tanking.
halfway during the looting our tanked decided to ninja engage yogg, lmao that was funny!

next week: yogg-saron

tank vs heal

9 June 2009

prior to ulduar i was a tank and had never been resto spec ever. since ulduar came out with duel spec i decided to have my off-sepc resto. but seeing as our guild has plenty of tanks i was asked to heal eventhough i had major crappy gear (pre wrath of the lich king gear). so over the past month i have been healing and getting upgrades slowly and learning how to heal as resto.
i have not been low on the healing charts at all compared to the other geared healers…skill? i do get to tank heroics but it’s just not the same as tanking XT or the adds on Ignis.
in the beginning i found healing to be extremely difficult as i was not used to it but over the past few week i have learned how to heal and use the different abilities. i’ve really enjoyed healing up until now and i do miss tanking, but getting to see new bosses and that is way more fun and entertaining than bitching and moaning cause you can’t get to play your preferred spec. i still get to upgrade my tanking gear of course, so i am definitely not complaining!
with this new skin change to the feral bear and cat forms, i just wish blizzard would have also had a look at the tree and moonkin forms too! seeing as in our raid group sometimes you have 1 bear and about 6 trees.
so for now, resto is my thing until we lose a tank or i get the chance again to be tank.

oo0o, new green grass! nom nom nom!

3 June 2009

after 4 years at my current employer, i decided that it’s time to move to a greener patch. it came as a very big surprise to them and everyone, but it is something i needed to do and i know i will enjoy the new opportunity!
i’ll be commuting to the CBD now which is not that of a big deal as everyone is making it out to be. where i currently am i start at 6am every 2nd week anyways so i’m used to the early morning.
so far all i know is i’m going to be working at a software development company that’s got much less people ( YAY! ) and the people are awesome! gonna be doing the same things that i am currently doing, just on a much smaller scale.
oh yes, it’s my last month here at compuscan. got alot of documentation and knowledge transfer to do. i’ll be starting at the new place 1 july. didn’t want to take a few days off before i start new job. i just wanted to jump in immediately cause i’m so excited!

thorim down!

22 May 2009

wednesday night i missed raid and the guild downed the first 2 chambers and killed hodir. awesome job guys…we are about a month old now and have only raided 3 weeks.

last night we downed freya and then attempted thorim. i think it took 3 attempts on him. last week our attempt on him was piss poor and we lacked the dps needed and missed him by 4million health. this week though we did not have that issue and downed him pretty easily. the only way we wiped was the group that went into the tunnel, dying.
the beginning you just kill the pat in the middle of the room and then some chick start babbling about how we come to kill thorim and he needs to destroy us, bla bla bla.
you need to have 2 groups, one group to go into a tunnel, a gauntlet type thing. 2 tanks, 2 healers and about 6 or 7 ranged dps. i for one have not been there so i was not paying attention as to what you need to do. the other group, the one i was in, stays behind in the room and the tank just picks up the adds that pop up all the time and the dps just kill them off. it gets pretty intense after a while. once the gauntlet group has finished killing mini bosses and finished the gauntlet they come back to where we are and phase 3 starts. this is pretty hectic as there is this lightning arc he does which does insane damage, the poor melee dps has to be moving most of the time to avoid dying, healers have an insane job, as phase 2 is intense too and half way in phase 3 some of the healers go oom. well that happened last week but this week i had mana regen pots and mana regen food so that helped me tons!
was good to see thorim downed so easily. i got my first ulduar loots. T8 helm *bounce*
we decided to give mimiron a try. wow, what a fight he is. managed to see 3 of his 4 phases. but i’ll write up about it when we down him.

monday: mimiron
