community shield
so Sunday is the Community Shield between Manchester United and Chelsea and hopefully it will be an entertaining affair.
Pre-season for Chelsea has not been all that wonderful. losing their last 3 games to Ajax, Frankfurt and Hamburg. even though they fielded some inexperienced players, the likes of Essien, Lampard, Benayoun, Terry and Anelka all playing most games they did not look up to scratch. With Ballack and Joe Cole who left on free transfers it would be interesting to see if Essien can stay fit enough the whole season to be able to partner Lampard in the middle. Peter Cech is out on Sunday leaving Hilario between the sticks. Drogba is back from injury and should be fit enough to start on Sunday after completing 45 minutes against Hamburg.
UPDATE: Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed his starting XI for Sunday’s Community Shield.
Starting XI: Henrique Hilario, Paulo Ferreira, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, John Mikel Obi, Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou, Nicolas Anelka, Florent Malouda.
Subs: Ross Turnbull, Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, Yossi Benayoun, Yuri Zhirkov, Gael Kakuta, Daniel Sturridge, Jeffrey Bruma.
Manchester United had a good pre-season in the states with the young squad winning 4 out of 6 of their games. If I was Ferguson I would be having a major head with choosing a squad for sunday as Berbatov, Rooney, Michael Owen, Hernandez, Macheda are all at his disposal as strikers and they were all on form in pre-season. Carrick picked up an injury and will miss out the opening games of the Premier League. With Ferdinand still injured, Jonny Evans and Vidic should occupy at the center of defence. Fletcher and Scholes should be in the center of midfield with Valencia and Nani out on the wings. Park might slot in there for either one on the wings. Again, I am glad I don’t choose the teams.
My prediction: ManUtd 3 – 1 Chelsea
