NASA finds a new life form

this is just amazing to know that even on our own front step there is millions of things we still don’t know or understand.
when i was a kid, one of the things i wanted to be was a microbiologist. it is just awesome discovering new things in the biology and science field.

this directly from NASA website.

NASA-funded astrobiology research has changed the fundamental knowledge about what comprises all known life on Earth.

Researchers conducting tests in the harsh environment of Mono Lake in California have discovered the first known microorganism on Earth able to thrive and reproduce using the toxic chemical arsenic. The microorganism substitutes arsenic for phosphorus in its cell components.

“The definition of life has just expanded,” said Ed Weiler, NASA’s associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s Headquarters in Washington. “As we pursue our efforts to seek signs of life in the solar system, we have to think more broadly, more diversely and consider life as we do not know it.”

This finding of an alternative biochemistry makeup will alter biology textbooks and expand the scope of the search for life beyond Earth. The research is published in this week’s edition of Science Express.

Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur are the six basic building blocks of all known forms of life on Earth. Phosphorus is part of the chemical backbone of DNA and RNA, the structures that carry genetic instructions for life, and is considered an essential element for all living cells.

Phosphorus is a central component of the energy-carrying molecule in all cells (adenosine triphosphate) and also the phospholipids that form all cell membranes. Arsenic, which is chemically similar to phosphorus, is poisonous for most life on Earth. Arsenic disrupts metabolic pathways because chemically it behaves similarly to phosphate.

“We know that some microbes can breathe arsenic, but what we’ve found is a microbe doing something new — building parts of itself out of arsenic,” said Felisa Wolfe-Simon, a NASA Astrobiology Research Fellow in residence at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., and the research team’s lead scientist. “If something here on Earth can do something so unexpected, what else can life do that we haven’t seen yet?”

The newly discovered microbe, strain GFAJ-1, is a member of a common group of bacteria, the Gammaproteobacteria. In the laboratory, the researchers successfully grew microbes from the lake on a diet that was very lean on phosphorus, but included generous helpings of arsenic. When researchers removed the phosphorus and replaced it with arsenic the microbes continued to grow. Subsequent analyses indicated that the arsenic was being used to produce the building blocks of new GFAJ-1 cells.

The key issue the researchers investigated was when the microbe was grown on arsenic did the arsenic actually became incorporated into the organisms’ vital biochemical machinery, such as DNA, proteins and the cell membranes. A variety of sophisticated laboratory techniques was used to determine where the arsenic was incorporated.

what a move

whenever people tell me after a move they never want to move again, now i know why. this has been a rough 2 days and am very glad and thankful it is over!

this weekend was packing galore. we packed so many things into boxes i lost count as to how many boxes we packed! even though the cats loved running around on the boxes they sensed something was up and were not their usual selves.

monday morning i had a few more things to do, pack up my computer and then also do the fish tank. i wanted to put the fish in a bowl at the last minute.

i was stressing just a little tad due to the fact that we were only going to get the keys around 1:30pm and the only time the movers had available was from 9am! i was hoping they would take a while to pack and i was happy to see them only rock up at 9:20am! they started loading everything into the huge ass truck and they were kind enough to load more than we specified on the list. you know how these things go, you never really know how much stuff you have until it gets loaded into the truck!
they were finished loading just after 12! we were right on time! i had some old stuff in the garage that i had to sort out and needed to take to the dump the next day but they were kind enough to take the stuff for themselves to use! what a bonus!!! one less thing to worry about and some of them were over the moon from the stuff. the one guy was so happy he had a fishing rod and all the fish accessories i had given him. i still needed to come back the next day to clean out the garage from the mess the roof made and the cardboard boxes left over.

i had to lead the truck to the new place and i took my time driving and not sure how many people i pissed off driving slow…i just didn’t care really. anyhoo, we got there at 1pm and the estate agent rocked up 2 minutes later. the guys started packing all our stuff into the garage because we had one small little problem. the carpets were wet!
the guys finished packing just after 2pm and the estate agent in the meantime was doing an inspection of the place and then afterwards took me through the place and discussed the issues at hand. nothing big that was wrong just that some walls will be repainted, the yard looks shocking because of the previous owner’s dogs and i need to sort out the aerial on the roof as previous owners cut the cable.

Mel was still at our old place cleaning the place up and she had to bring the cats through. She eventually got there and the poor cats didn’t know what was going on and hid in the bathroom for quite a while. We first put up curtains on all the windows except for the kitchen because we don’t have curtains for those as previous place had blinds. once we put the curtains up the cats decided it a safe spot to be behind.

we were invited to supper by a friend who stays in the same complex as us. nice home cooked meal! lasagne and bottle of wine! he then showed me the xbox kinetic. can someone please get me that for xmas? thanks! geeez, it’s awesome! we played bowling, table tennis and boxing and it tired me out. sheeesh! who needs gym???
he then took out his racing seat and put on GT5. WOW! simply amazing! i struggled to drive as i have never rode in the racing seat before but a few more practices and i’ll be pro!

we got back home and the carpets were still pretty wet so we laid a bed on the kitchen floor and Mel slept alright but I struggled to sleep and my back was so sore. I managed about 3 hours sleep but was up from about 2am chatting to a buddy of mine.

the next day i had to go drop the keys off and clean the garage at old place. later the afternoon the floors were finally dry enough to move stuff into the house! i moved the bed from the garage into the main room and then took a small table and setup my pc in my room and had lunch while watching some series.

after that it was time for the big stuff, couches, bookshelves, tables, microwave and some other stuff, but i left the 2 desks in the garage as i cannot get them in the house on my own. will have to wait till the weekend for that.
Mel got home and she arranged the furniture around, made supper and we watched some series.

our new place is really starting to feel like home now and it is going to take a while to have everything unpacked and arranged how we want it.

i still need to sort out telkom, i put the process in yesterday but you know them, they will take their sweet ass time :-(
need to do some other stuff to to change address…gah, not fun. will need to go check old place’s mailbox maybe 2ice a month for a bit…meh.

today in a nutshell

when i woke up this morning i did not expect to have a day like i had today.

i hit the snooze button twice but i still managed to leave work on time. just before i got to the office i received a miss call from the current estate agent. as i was walking to the office i listened to the voicemail which basically said, “you have to be our of current place by 12pm tuesday” i kinda went into a flat spin and got to my desk and already had people saying i must help them with urgent things but i told them to wait and give me a while to sort out my personal issues first. in all fairness, mine WAS high priority and you will see now why.

let me first tell you my plans for next week, it was a study day monday because tuesday i am writing the VCP exam at 10am and then wednesday the planned move. now you asking me, but you just said estate agent said you have to be out tuesday 12pm? yes, that’s when i went into a flat spin.

i was NOT going to phone the wife to tell her this because i know her. she would panic, stress, and all that jazz and i cannot put her through that onto of the current stress of moving house. so i decided to defuse this bomb.

first things first i phoned the exam place to reschedule my exam for the 8th. then i phoned the new estate agent asking very nicely when is the earliest we can move in. keys are being handed over on monday just after 1pm : ) )
then i phoned the moving company. yes, already booked for the 1st and i was hoping that somehow i could get tuesday morning!
Manager: “sorry, only available tuesday afternoon”
*FLATSPIN*
Me: “monday?” ”
Manager: “day looks busy BUT we will be able to pickup your stuff and drop them off just to help you out”
Me: “you are my superhero”

then i phoned the wife and told her the whole story. i made a joke with the guys at work saying the only reason she might be a bit cross for this whole ordeal is now we have TWO less days to pack! she laughed when i told her that.

and then i had to deal with fixing things at work that were like a maize to figure out, but as usual this guy is a genius if i must say so myself. no problem too big or too small, if you need help just call, CHIIIP and DALE, rescue rangers, ooops….got carried away there.

so i’m hoping for a nice quiet evening with a bottle of wine and maybe watching some series and also the football and pack one or two boxes.

the last few weeks or 2

so you all have probably been wondering why i have not blogged in a couple of weeks. life has been crazy and just have not had the time to blog about the past few weeks. i had a number of awesome blog posts lined up and now they literally 2 weeks overdue and hopefully it ain’t too late to blog about them this weekend.

anyhoo, here is just a quick and short version of what has been happening the past couple of weeks.

up until 3 weeks ago we were planning to renew our lease on our current place. that all changed when Mel accepted a position in stellenbosch. we notified the estate agent we didn’t want to renew and asked if they could give us another month to find a place. they were pretty fine about that. the only thing was to find new tenants and also find a new place ASAP. we found new tenants for our place within 2 days. it took us about 2 weeks to find a nice place for us and we are going to go sign the lease tomorrow. now it’s just a matter of notifying the moving company and start packing everything. we move into new place 1 december.

work has been crazy and been working some late nights just to finish off some deadlines. work also sent me on a training course for vSphere4 (VMWare) this week and enjoying it lots even though 80% of the stuff that they teach you i have been using for the last couple of years.

on some entertainment side, Mel and i went to the herlderberg wine festival last week saturday and sunday and manage to visit 15 or so farms and walk away with about 12 bottles of wine. the monday we went to watch the premier for The Social Network which was surprisingly good. the tuesday we went to go watch crowed house which was simply awesome to watch! oh yes, and our action cricket team won silver for the winter league! we lost out on gold by 1 run! awesome game though which we all enjoyed immensely!

i was planning on blogging about each event but just have not had the time to. i don’t see things slowing down and hopefully i can find some time to update once in a while!

movember, just do it!

next month is november and that means it’s movember!
what is movember you might be asking yourself?
Movember (a portmanteau of the words ‘moustache’ and ‘November’), is an annual month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November.
But why?
Since 2004, the Movember Foundation charity has run Movember events to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and depression.

so guess what i am going to do and i am encouraging all you guys to do this for november! grow a moustache for this month! actually screw the encouraging….i am actually challenging you. go to a href=”http://za.movember.com/” target=”_blank”>movember and register.
