what a weekend!

22 February 2010

so friday i had a 13 hours day at work and only managed to get out the office at around 6:45pm and headed home to pick up my wife. headed for La Perla in Sea Point to meet up with my dad. we had a drink or two there and then headed to Spur. was a nice evening, eating outside on the balcony and only left there after 12am.

saturday went to get a scale so i can monitor my #lose10kg with a buddy of mine in 20 weeks. the evening headed out to a friend’s birthday “pub crawling”. we first headed out of babushkas in durbanville and watched the final few minutes of the rugby and had a couple of drinks there and talking and talking, drinking a few more. the girls wants to go dance so decided to head to stones (sigh). the bouncer would not let us in because my friend’s husband’s WIFE did not have her id on her at the time. can you believe it? we basically said a big F U to the bouncer and decided to go to blizzard just down the road. the girls had alotta fun there dancing and just going nuts. the guys just sat around the table drinking and talking a bunch of shit. couple of hours later we headed off to starlite diner. before we went there i was hungry as hell but as soon as i ordered my food, i was too tired to eat and decided i’d have it for lunch. by this time it was already 4:30am.

sunday wokeup at 1pm and got ready to go meet up with some friends and see just jinjer at kirstenbosch. it was by far one of the most awesome concerts i have been to. atmosphere was awesome, the performance was epic and Ard was just his usual self. haha. you should have been there to have seen it. afterwards went through to houtbay and go grab some pizza at Massimo’s Pizza Club. it was a very nice vibe and the pizza was good!

my camera’s batteries were flat most of the weekend and managed to get batteries of last night. check out some of the pics from the just jinger concert.

Movie Trailer: Avatar – The Last Airbender

17 February 2010

so i have been watching the series but still require book three (fire). even though it is a cartoon series on Nickelodeon, it is still awesome!

now they bringing out the “real life” movie of book one it seems and the trailer actually looks awesome! i really just hope the movie lives up to the series otherwise i’ll be ver disappointed! it is due for cinemas on 2 july 2010.

The story follows the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

2010 budget speech

17 February 2010

for those that want to read the full speech read it here

for the others who are lazy, here are some highlights from a quick glance through the budget speech:

  • growth expectation for 2010 is now 2.3 per cent, rising to 3.6 per cent by 2012
  • Reserve Bank will continue to pursue a target for CPI inflation of 3 to 6 per cent
  • public debt is expected to rise from 23 per cent of GDP in 2008/09 to about 40 per cent in 2013, and will only stabilise in 2015
  • As a result of the deterioration in the South African economy, we now expect to raise R69 billion less in tax this year than we budgeted. Consolidated revenue will be R658 billion in 2009/10, which is R32 billion less than in the past fiscal year.
  • To support further broadening of access to medical scheme membership, the monthly monetary caps for deductible medical scheme contributions are also increased. Taking into account the effect of the tax system on savings, the annual tax-free interest income will be increased from R21 000 to R22 300 for individuals below 65 years and from R30 000 to R32 000 for individuals 65 years and over.
  • It is proposed to increase taxes on fuel by 25.5 cents a litre. This includes a 7.5 cents a litre increase to contribute to the funding of a new multiproduct petroleum pipeline between Durban and Gauteng, and an increase of 8 cents a litre in the road accident fund levy
  • the consolidated budget of government for next year is R907 billion and over the next three years, we will be spending R2.9 trillion. The fiscal framework makes provision for an increase in spending over the MTEF period amounting to R87 billion. In addition, about R25.6 billion has been identified through savings. So in total, we are able to add R112 billion to the baselines of departmental budgets.
  • The total budget for education next year is R165 billion.
  • In 2010/11, R89 billion will be spent on social grants. Provision has been made for the phased extension of the child support grant up to a child?s 18th birthday. The state old age pension and the disability grant rises by R70 to R1 080 a month. The child support grant increases by R10 to R250 a month. We recognise that the increase in the child support grant is slightly below the inflation rate, but the social benefit and the cost of bringing in two million more children implies that we have to adjust this grant more moderately.
  • The sin tax increases mean a packet of 20 cigarettes will cost R1.24 more, while a bottle of beer (340ml) and a bottle of wine (750ml) will cost 6.5c and 12c more respectively.
  • A bottle of spirits (750ml) will cost R2.22c more.
  • Actual sin tax hikes were all above inflation. Excise duty on beer, wine and spirits increased by about 8%, while the excise duty on cigarettes was a little more than 16%.
  • The excise duty on traditional beer was maintained at 7.82c per litre, while that on cigars was hiked 6.2%.

that’s all i’ve seen so far, if i have missed anything please let me know and i’ll add it into the summary.

tax breaks across the board

17 February 2010
from fin24.com

Lower income earners will score the biggest slice of the tax relief measures announced in Wednesday’s Budget.

Of the R6.5bn of tax relief provided for in this year’s Budget, 24,6% will be earmarked for taxpayers with an annual income below R150 000 and another 28.8% will be set aside for taxpayers earning between R150 001 and R250 000.

Taxpayers earning between R250 000 and R500 000 will receive 26.2% of the tax breaks, and those with an annual taxable income bigger than R500 000 will receive 20.4%.

Statistics released in the Budget’s Tax Handbook showed that taxpayers with an annual income above R500 000 accounted for 44% of personal income tax revenue. Taxpayers with an annual income below R250 000 accounted for 30% of personal income tax revenue, while those earning between R250 000 to R500 000 accounted for 26%.

The primary rebate was increased to R10 260 for all individuals, and the secondary rebate – applicable to taxpayers over 65 years old – was increased R5 675 a year.

The income tax threshold – below which individuals are not liable for personal income tax – was increased to R57 000 of taxable income per year for those below the age of 65 and to R88 528 to those over 65 years.

There was further good news for savers with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan increasing the annual tax-free interest income threshold from R21 000 to R22 300. For pensioners (taxpayers over 65 years) the interest income threshold was increased from R30 000 to R32 000.

Tax table:

Taxable income Rates of tax
R0 – R140 000 18% of each R1
R140 000 – R221 000 R25 200 + 25% of the amount above R140 000
R221 001 – R305 000 R45 450 + 30% of the amount above R221 000
R305 001 – R431 000 - R70 650 + 35% of the amount above R431 000
R552 001 and above R160 730 + 40% of the amount above R552 000

Rebates:

Primary: R10 260
Secondary: R5 675

Tax threshold:

Below age 65 R57 000
Age 65 and over: R88 528

healthyness and fitness challenge

17 February 2010

this was part of my new years resolutions back in Jan.

  • start a sport again
  • stick to a healthy diet (eating left over pizza while i type this, lol)

i started action soccer again back in Jan and the one problem i am having is, fitness. i almost died when i played my first game. i used to be able to run up and down nonstop 2 years ago and never get tired. sadly, thinking one might still be able to do it now doesn’t work.

anyhoo, i started training outdoor soccer again at sunningdale football club out in parklands. i started there last week and we are working on our fitness. fitness is a key part in any sport and the coach is drilling us hard. last week i almost died as it was the first time i had run like that since the last time i played for bellville city which was 2 seasons ago. i tend to train hard and get back to the fitness form i was back then. hyperactive geoff running around not getting tired. it is something to work and strive for. going to be hard work but whoever said that it was going to be easy is lying.

but apart from the fitness and that, i need to look at my eating habits too. as from today i am cutting out alot of fattening things and starting to eat more healthy. yes i know i have picked up a bit of weight, especially on the belly side. but this is a perfect opportunity to get rid of some of this weight! it is going to be hard, real hard to resist the temptations :( i need some encouragement and also the willpower for this! i need to weigh myself and see how much i lose and keep track of it.

i wonder if i should keep a statistical update on what i eat and weight each week here. would be interesting to see how it goes and also get some feedback from you guys and gals :)
